India's cap has been disrespected by the selectors

I read Sidarth Monga's article about Zimbabwean tour, and one word that he had used for India was 'lacklustrous'.I find it absolutely apt.Hardly anyone could argue with this.Indian players with the exception of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli just didn't deliver the goods when required.Consequently,India has dropped from 2nd spot to 3rd on ICC's ODI Ranking. Many bloggers from various parts of the world have started feeling, that it is time the selectors should drop Dinesh Karthik,Yusuf Pathan,Ravindra Jadeja and Murali Vijay.I partly agree with them because dropping Yusuf,Jadeja and Karthik is still justified, but probably not Vijay. The short ball is most definitely Yusuf's problem and unless he sorts it out by touring with India A and such teams to other countries like England,Australia and South Africa,Yusuf's incredible talent will be wasted. If however,he doesn't get it right, then he should rather make way for other players who might be as talented as him.Dinesh Karthik has been the second keeper for a long time and gets the spot if Dhoni isn't fit or decides to rest.He might have done reasonably well as a makeshift opener in Tests and also in IPL with the Delhi Daredevils,he hasn't done well in ODI's for India.I think he is talented batsmen and good with the gloves as well, but he isn't the ideal opener. So either he shouldn't be picked or if he is picked then should play as a middle order batsmen which he is.Jadeja has got many chances now and has never impressed on the international level.I think,Irfan Pathan should be drafted back in to the line up as an all-rounder in his place.Vijay on the other hand, hasn't really got that many chances. He has played less than 8 ODI's and T20's,so people should not conclude from just one or two series.I think he should be picked again if Sehwag or Gambhir are unfit.
What really irritates me is the selection of players and not the performances of players.I can see no reason to pick Ashok Dinda,Abhimanyu Mithun,Pankaj Singh,R Ashwin,Umesh Yadav and Naman Ojha.Mithun came in as a replacement to Vinay Kumar, who selection is also questionable.Kris Srikkanth and the group of selectors have made some really foolish decisions.None of the players I just mentioned have ever played for India A or any Board President's team which tour foreign countries and are used to foreign conditions.Yes,Vinay Kumar and Ashwin have performed well in the IPL,but if the selectors keep changing their mind on which is second spinner after Harbhajan Singh and exclude Ishant Sharma from even the so called second string team, then it will only irritate young players and keep them confused. They should also consider Murali Kartik who has been impressive everytime in IPL and domestic after his successful stint with the Middlesex team. The team that was picked was most definitely unbalanced. It was very irresponsible for them to pick such a side with little experience of playing the overseas.Players like Ishant Sharma,Irfan Pathan,S Badrinath who are very talented and more experienced haven't been picked for the ongoing India A tour of England either. It surprises me because I would feel the selectors don't think they belong to top 35 players in India, which most definitely isn't true.
So my message to the the selectors would be:-
Playing for India is a honour and it is disrespectful if any guy who has doesn't deserve it gets that honour.I cannot believe the selection of Pankaj SIngh and Abhimanyu Mithun. It is high time players from Tamil Nadu stop getting selected thanks to you,Mr.Srikkanth.

  4. there is very fine line between performance and selection... had these guys won the matches there we would all be calling it a masterstroke...

i still think the team had still enough batting talent to compensate the weak seam bowling and good spinners... it just that vijay & co. developed cold feet somehow and we never set the batting order right whole series...

but overall it was good learning experience for many youngsters that too so early in their careers...

  5. Hi everyone,
Firstly thanks to sam for the appreciation, please keep giving your reviews about further posts.Secondly, coming to your point Mr.Bisht,I did not like the selection the moment the team had been announced. Not because of the result, but because of lack of sense.Just like Dhoni's illogical move to move Hayden to mid off in IPL 3 Final when he had a long off.It got him a wicket and everyone said great captaincy, but I still think it was stupid and senseless. So,even if this team had done well,I am not satified by job done by selectors. You just cannot confuse fast bowlers and spinners. One series Chawla is picked, next Mishra is picked and then AShwin is picked. They must stop playing musical chairs.

  6. So weren't Kumar and Mithun the highest wicket-takers in last year's domestic competition. Mithun has a bit of talent but is still raw. Kumar averages around 25 in ranji trophy and that is good as the wickets in India don't have anything in it for the quicker bowlers. The worry is picking a player and dropping him after a few matches and picking another player.

I don't think Irfan Pathan has performed well in his last 2 or 3 years in one-day cricket. So he may not justify a place in the side.

  7. Hey Gb,
Mithun hasn't played too much of domestic cricket or list a cricket, which is why his selection to a foreign tour is arguable.
When it comes to Kumar, yes his domestic record is decent. But I want to remind you of another guy.Joginder Sharma,he has been performing consistently in domestic as an allrounder since a long time. When he played in T20 WC back in 2007,India did win,but frankly speaking he was hardly any use with either bat or ball.Indian pitches are slow, hence such slow bowlers are difficult to get away and successful. However,I dont see them being successful on other kinds of tracks.Remember IpL 2,Vinay Kumar wasn't successful then in South Africa. He got success only in India.
But,I have to add,I don't entirely hate this guy,coz he seems hard working and determined. The question is "Is he really talented enough for the big stage..??"
Only time will answer that I guess.
